Why Japan?

Escape.

Japan is filled with endless natural beauty just waiting to be explored. Even a year may not be enough. But make sure to at least see these.

  • The blue rivers of Takachiho Gorge
  • The white sands of Kabira Bay
  • The Yaku monkeys of Yakushima Island
  • The towering walls of Akiyoshido Cave
  • The sunrise from the top of Mt. Fuji

And fortunately, holidays won’t be a problem. Full-time teachers at Shane English School Japan get about 6 weeks of annual leave. With week-long holidays in summer, spring, and winter, you’ll have no excuse to not get out among Japan’s many natural wonders.

Explore.

Japan has a huge demand for learning English, and teachers are compensated handsomely for providing it. English teachers are able to…

  • Live in a comfortable apartment in Tokyo.
  • Eat out and socialize regularly.
  • Travel around the country on days off.
  • Indulge in some of the best shopping in the world.

Japan may not be the highest earning country in Asia for English teachers, but it’s still a fantastic salary for what might be one of the greatest experiences you’ll have.

Work Schedule

Teachers at SESJ work a regular schedule of 5 working days per week. In most cases, teachers work at one particular location on any given day, but a different school each day. The schedule is designed so that teachers generally see the same students, at the same location, at the same time each week.

Teaching generally between 4 – 6.5 hours per day with a target of 29.5 teaching hours per week. Classes start between 12 – 1 in the afternoon on weekdays, however, weekends may see the schedule moved forward as students don’t have to attend their local schools.

Curriculum and Courses

SESJ courses are designed around a core set of texts and supplementary materials which are cross-referenced to in-house syllabuses and pacing schedules. However, teachers are encouraged to introduce any personal resources or ideas they think will be valuable to their class.

The texts used for adult courses are predominantly in-house produced British English texts while the childrens’ courses are made up almost exclusively of SESJ materials, specifically produced to meet the needs of Japanese students.
