Josh is the most experienced staff member at Shane Yangzhou, with over 5 years experience under his belt. In addition to being a gifted and experienced teacher, his high level of Chinese lets him share ideas between the foreign and Chinese staff members. Josh is well known throughout Yangzhou and is a great example of what teachers can amount to when they put their mind to something. He reviews teachers lesson plans, updates the course structure, and handles all academic related problems and matters that need fine-tuning.

Shane English Schools Dalian has been in operation for 15 years. Right now, they have 3 campuses with a total of over 1000 students enrolled in the school. All 3 campuses are in super convenient locations so teachers never have to travel far. The schools are all very close to supermarkets, shopping malls, restaurants, and the Dalian metro system.
They have an international and professional team of 11 foreign teachers and 12 teaching assistants. The school has an excellent staff retention rate, with half of the current foreign teachers having stayed with the school for over 3 years. Staff dinners and outings are often organized to add more family feel to the professional working environment.
I’ve been working at Shane English School, in Dalian, for approaching four years now. I honestly couldn’t be happier with my placement here. The school has expanded and relocated since I’ve been here which reflects the school’s ambition. When coming to China to teach and live it can be daunting as there are so many horror stories about how schools here can mess you around with pay or scheduling etc. I experienced this very thing at my first school here in Harbin. Shane is professionally run with a great and friendly team of Chinese support staff who will do anything and everything you need them to in order to settle in here well. The location of the school is perfect for everyday tasks such as grocery shopping but also close by to a hub for foreigners to relax and socialize. I can’t attest to every school here, but from the ones I’ve experienced here, Shane is by far the easiest and most accommodating to work for.
2015 to present
Shane English School has been a wonderful school to work for. From the initial process of interviews through the visa process and our first few weeks in Dalian, the Shane English team made my family’s transition from the USA to China simple and extremely welcoming. I have always felt comfortable being a member of the Shane English team in Dalian. The foreign teachers and the Chinese Teachers are friendly, helpful, and make the days at work enjoyable and fun. Any time I have had any questions or concerns, the staff at Shane have made themselves available to answer the questions and help find solutions. This was my first experience working for an English School overseas and it honestly couldn’t have been any better of an experience and I’m very glad to be a teacher with Shane English School in Dalian.
2018 to present
From the moment I arrived in China and was met at the airport – apprehensive, travel-stained and (very) jet-lagged – Shane’s staff were always on hand to ensure that I was able to adapt to life in this new country as quickly and smoothly as possible. They were always ready and willing to help with any problems or difficulties, both inside and outside the school. Living so far away from home, in a country like China it is really important to know that there are people there on hand to have your back in case of any difficulties. Shane’s staff definitely helped in this regard, allowing me to easily adjust to my new lifestyle.
In terms of classes, I thoroughly enjoyed my time teaching at Shane. Although inexperienced when I arrived, I found that I was quickly able to learn, adapt and develop as a teacher – and a big reason for this was the way in which other foreign teachers and Chinese staff were always on hand to offer help and advice whenever needed. Support was always on hand at the school, which helped me settle in and enjoy my time teaching.
While the lesson aims and expectations were clearly set out for me, I also had the freedom to adapt lessons to fit my own teaching style, including any additional activities I felt would be beneficial (and fun) for the students. Having the freedom to teach in a way which best suited me really made me feel valued as a teacher, rather than just being seen as a classroom ‘prop’, which was very important to me. Teaching hours were also not excessive, so I had plenty of time to explore in and around Dalian (and beyond) in my spare time.
Overall, as a city, Dalian is a great place to live, and as a school, I found that Shane was a great place to work. Classes are fun (although this is of course mostly down to you as the teacher) and the work atmosphere is open, friendly and co-operative. I have moved on now but if I were to ever go back to teaching kids in Dalian I would be more than happy to return to Shane.
2014 to 2016
China isn’t for everyone but I’m certainly glad I came here. Life in China is what you make of it. You can truly grow as a person and teacher if you open your mind and spirit. You will certainly look at the world differently than you did before. Chinese food, culture and society are extremely different than what you probably think it is. You certainly appreciate the different intricacies of the world in a greater context than you did before. I’ve also learned much about Irish, South African and British culture since being here since you work with people from various countries.
I teach a vast array of fluency levels within our school. I teach four-year-olds just learning the English language on Wednesdays and competent fifteen-year-olds eager to ask life about America on Saturdays. Most of my classes are filled by ten or eleven-year-old students. I enjoy interacting with the kids and putting a smile on their faces.

I have been with Shane in Dalian for a year now teaching English from small groups to one on one classes. Working with group of people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds is an amazing experience. Assisting new and old teachers with my background in teaching and life itself and also learning from them gives you the support needed to improve.
Dalian is an amazing city as you have everything you need to live comfortably. From western styled restaurants to Chinese restaurants, Walmart and Carrefour where you can find some western foods and ingredients if you love cooking. Winter snow and lights being put out for the Chinese New Year makes this city especially beautiful during winter times. All modes of transport; from using taxis, busses to using the subway makes it easy to travel through the city.
