Why Teachers Love Shaoxing
Shaoxing is a canal city surrounded by mountains and trees; all the while it juxtaposes ancient architecture with a sprawling metropolis. On the older, more traditional side of town, you can wander through the water town, stroll along the canals and sample some of the local cuisine in Cang Qiao Zhi Jie (仓桥直街). On the more cosmopolitan side of town, you can let your hair down by shopping, visiting one of the many restaurants in the area, see a movie, or even practice your singing at a KTV (always a good time!). Shaoxing is a clean city with many green open spaces, while also being an ever-growing city that’s expanding very quickly.
One thing which is great about Shaoxing is that it has its own high-speed rail station. This means that weekend trips to other cities within China are easy as Hangzhou is only 20 minutes away, Shanghai is 1 hour and 30 minutes, Nanjing is around 2 hours away, while Beijing is 6 hours by high-speed train.
In my opinion, the biggest advantage to living in a smaller city like Shaoxing is that it provides you with a great opportunity to embrace the local culture and practice your Chinese. If you were to stay in a major city, it’s very easy to stay in your comfort zone and not challenge yourself. This means missing out on seeing new and exciting places, trying new foods that you never would have, but most of all, missing out on making new friendships with people you otherwise wouldn’t have. By choosing Shaoxing, you’re making the choice to experience and see for yourself what a real Chinese town is like.

Why Teachers Want to Work at Shane English School Shaoxing
Shane English School Shaoxing started as just a small group of Chinese staff and a single foreign teacher but quickly passed 100 students in their first six months of being open. Now, with a team of 4 foreign teachers and around 300 students, the school is looking to open a second campus in the Keqiao district.
One of the great things about Shane Shaoxing is the school culture. Everybody at the school is willing to help one another to succeed. If anyone needs any help, someone is always willing to lend a helping hand. Everyone is thought of as family. Every few months the staff get together as a group and visit some of the more breathtaking parts of Shaoxing to help create some lasting memories, while always sharing a laugh or two.
Getting around Shaoxing is easy, as you have the option to walk, use a bicycle, ride an e-bike, or even take a taxi. The city is currently building a metro line throughout Shaoxing which will also connect it to Hangzhou. One of the metro stations will be a 2-minute walk from the school.
Meet the Academic Manager: Steven Jackson
My name’s Steven, I’m Australian, and I am the Academic Manager of the Shane English School in Shaoxing. I moved to China in 2015 to experience another culture and for the unique opportunity of living in another country which seemed very foreign. China is a large country which is steeped in history, while it also has plenty of interesting and beautiful places to see which helped pique my interest for originally coming to the country. I’ve travelled abroad to other countries in the past, and I can honestly say that some of the landscapes in China are truly unique and breathtaking. This fits perfectly with my hobby of landscape photography as there is always somewhere new to explore and capture.
I’ve been working with the Shane brand since I first arrived in China, however, I taught originally in the province of Jiangsu. I moved to Shaoxing in late 2017 to manage the Shaoxing School where I have been ever since. My duties at the school include several things such as teaching classes, conducting weekly workshops for the teachers, performing demo classes for prospective customers, providing support and teaching advice to new teachers, writing and editing course guides, and helping teachers with any issues they may have outside of work.
Shaoxing is a great city to live in. There’s also plenty to do whether you’re into outdoor adventures as the city is surrounded by low lying mountains, or brushing up on your Chinese culture and history by visiting some of the more traditional sections of town. When moving to Shaoxing I’d suggest buying an e-bike, even though taxis are readily available, it’s always more fun cruising around at 50km/h with the wind in your hair.
A little about myself: as I mentioned before I enjoy landscape photography, playing guitar, memes, and spending time with my wife and a young son. I’m always looking forward to welcoming the next member of staff to the Shaoxing team and happy to help in any way I can.
