Young people who are moved to spend a significant period of time in service to communities in need; in caring, teaching or environmental placements, apply to Gap Activity Projects (GAP) for a placement. See www.gap.org.uk for details.

GAP sends about 1,600 volunteers each year to a total of 33 countries worldwide. The volunteers have to finance their trip including travel expenses, insurance, their teaching skills course.

Once in their placement they receive free board and lodging to local standards and a little bit of pocket money.

Saxoncourt trains between 700 and 800 volunteers a year in the UK and when requested runs in-country courses. We have run courses in Slovakia, The Czech Republic and Thailand.

The volunteers work in local schools helping the children with their English or other subjects. They also participate in extra-curricular activities and will often start or help with projects like a drama group or the school orchestra, depending on their talents. They usually return full of happy memories and significantly changed at the end of their placement. Our course aims to help them gain the basic techniques needed to have the confidence to begin their teaching placements.

As well as running the teaching skills courses we are also very happy to be a member of the GAP Business Partnership Scheme. This is a fundraising initiative which allows businesses to support the important work of GAP in providing the infrastructure and support for the volunteers to do their voluntary work.

GAP celebrated their 30th anniversary by holding a fundraising celebration at the Foreign Office. and companies who are Business Partners with GAP were invited to attend and sponsor awards. Saxoncourt was proud to sponsor an award for the "Teacher of the Year". Princess Ann, the Patron of GAP, presented the awards.

Comments from three GAP volunteers who recently did our Teaching Skills Course
Lucy going to South Africa: "I had a FANTASTIC time! Real confidence builder. I'd never have thought I'd have the guts to teach a class by the end of the week"

Chris going to China: "The week was great for me and I enjoyed it all. The course was no doubt essential for the GAP year and I now feel a lot more confident."

Jon going to Vietnam: " Probably would not survive in Vietnam without the course."
