What is CELTA? 

An internationally recognised certificate moderated by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. CELTA stands for Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults.

The full-time CELTA course  

Course description:
The CELTA is the most widely recognised qualification both in the UK and internationally for entry into a career in English Language Teaching to Adults, ELTA. Suitable candidates will be offered jobs by Saxoncourt Teacher Recruitment at the end of the course.

This 4-week course offered by Saxoncourt TT, which is both extremely intensive and practical, provides candidates with a most thorough grounding in ELTA teaching techniques through a combination of instruction, observation and teaching practice.

The course itself involves 120 contact hours and includes a minimum of 6 hours observed teaching practice with English language students. The input sessions concentrate mainly on language analysis and classroom methodology, and include the following:

  • The principles of student-centred learning
  • Developing students’ language skills
  • Analysis of language
  • Clarifying and checking students’ understanding of language • Lesson planning
  • Classroom management
  • Professional development

Daily contact hours will normally span some 7 to 8 hours (from 09.30 to 17.00 hrs) with teaching preparation and written work in addition.

Course length: four weeks

The part-time CELTA course  

Course description:
The part-time CELTA course has the same components and the same contact hours as the full-time CELTA, only it spreads over 12 weeks and is suitable for candidates who are not able to dedicate 4 weeks to full time study or prefer a less intensive option.

Suitable candidates will be offered jobs by Saxoncourt Teacher Recruitment at the end of the course.

Course Schedule:
Tuesdays & Thursdays 6pm – 9pm
Saturdays 9am – 1pm

Entry Requirements: As for the Full-Time course above.

Course length: 12 weeks

 

Sample course content

1. Input sessions
These sessions consist of workshops, discussions, lectures, peer teaching and video viewing and cover the following areas:
- Analysis of language from a foreign learner’s perspective
- Learner motivation, needs and expectations
- Lesson planning and syllabus design
- Classroom management and the role of the teacher
- Approaches and techniques for introducing and practising language and for developing language skills
- Materials selection and evaluation

2. Teaching Practice
Teaching practice is an integral part of the course. It is organised in small groups of 5 or 6 trainees with volunteer students at two different levels and takes place every day. After each teaching practice session, a reflection and evaluation of the session is led by a course tutor. Personalised, individual, written feedback is also given.

3. Observation
The observation of formally-qualified, practising teachers is an intrinsic part of the course and takes place outside the main timetable.

4. Written Assignments
There are four written assignments to be completed during the course. These are of a practical nature and are designed to support the development of the teaching practice of course participants..
 
 

Candidates  

To be accepted for the Cambridge CELTA course candidates will:
Be 20 years of age (18 in exceptional circumstances)
Have a level of English both written and spoken that enables them to undertake the course (they do not need to be native speakers of English but they need ot have native speaker proficiency in English)
Be educated to a level equivalent to allow access to Higher Education in their home country
Need to complete an application form
Need to attend an interview (or telephone interview if unable to attend in person) and complete a written task

Certificates  

Successful candidates will receive the UCLES Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, CELTA
They will also receive a Saxoncourt Teacher Training Certificate, which describes their performance on the course in detail and is regarded by candidates and potential employers as a useful reference
 
 

Job opportunities 

The Cambridge CELTA is the industry standard TEFL qualification and as such is widely accepted by employers. Successful candidates will also be introduced to possible teaching opportunities through Saxoncourt Recruitment.
