Induction

The first week of a teacher's employment in Japan usually consists of an induction period. As many teachers do not have any training or experience in teaching English to children, there is a focus on teaching younger learners in this time (methodology, use or resources, observing more experienced teachers), but teachers are also introduced to SESJ's other courses and its administration systems.

Day 5 Training: Teaching Very Young Learners and Teens

TEYL Course

The Saxoncourt Teaching English to Younger Learners (TEYL) course covers all aspects of teaching Younger Learners for 2 years old to High School, and includes:

  •  methodology
  •  drilling
  •  classroom games
  •  classroom management
  •  how to effectively use textbooks and classroom resources
  •  lesson planning
  •  observing more experienced teachers
  •  written and practical assignments
  •  observations by the Director of Studies
  •  workshops

There are two days of follow-up training within three months of arrival. This training will focus on teaching reading, writing and phonics, as well as teaching pronunciation to adults, 1-to-1 lessons.

As a result, within the first three months of employment new teachers complete (subject to the necessary minimum standards of teaching and course work having been attained) the Saxoncourt Certificate in TEYL.

Workshops

Regular workshops are held which focus on teaching for exams (TOEIC, IELTS), Business English, Bear Cubs (aged 2.5 years), special lessons (such as intensives) and any other areas that teachers request help with.

Observations & Course Meetings

Regular individual and group meetings and observation feedback sessions will continue to be held between the teacher and their Director of Studies throughout the teacher's time with the school.
These occasions are an integral part of the support structure offered by Shane English Schools to its teachers, being a forum for a beneficial exchange of ideas as well as an opportunity for the teacher to discuss any problems they may be having in their classes.
