The Schools
  • Over 200 schools based primarily in the vast suburbs around Tokyo, although in recent years schools have also been opened in prime central Tokyo locations
  • They are very much part of the local neighborhood, providing a friendly, professional service to many kinds of students
  • Each school is usually made up of between 1 and 6 classrooms (typically 3 or 4)
  • The larger schools will have over 400 students, whilst newer and smaller ones may have as few as 100
  • All schools are equipped with course books and classroom materialsSESJ school reception
  • There are Japanese receptionists and school managers (JRS) at every school to deal with student enquiries and the problems of the day-to-day administration of the schools
  • Outside the classroom, teachers are expected to fulfill tasks asked of them by the JRS (e.g. interviewing prospective students, helping to place a new student in a suitable class etc.)
Materials
  • SES Japan uses its own course materials almost exclusively. They are specially written for the Japanese and SES study context. SESJ text books
  • The school employs textbooks from leading EFL publishers (OUP, CUP, Longman etc) in the case of higher level, business, ESP (English for Specific Purposes) and exams students (Toeic, Toefl, IELTS, Cambridge)
  • All schools are stocked with all the basic texts, tapes and teaching materials required: flashcards, puppets, fruit baskets, Lego, paints, crayons, TV/Video etc
  • There is no enforced 'Shane method', and teachers are encouraged to use their own ideas, as long as the monthly syllabus objectives and text book pacing are met
  • All students have text books

Head Offices and Head Schools
  • Extra 'ideas books', reference materials (including grammar and dictionaries) and photocopiable resources are in regional offices and district head schools, as are photocopiers.
  • Weekly visits are required to head offices in order make extra photocopies, meet with academic managers, check their pigeon holes, etc
  • Directors of Studies and Japanese Teacher Affairs (TA) staff (to help teachers with accommodation issues) are based in head offices
