Recruitment > China > Students
The majority of Shane students in China are Younger Learners, so enthusiasm for teaching this age group is essential. In Shane English Schools students study at the same time on the same day every week (sometimes twice a week). Students are taught both within the schools and in outside locations such as government kindergartens.

During their time with Shane English School China aim to give teachers the opportunity to teach a wide range of ages and abilities from three year olds to young professionals in companies.

Younger Learners

  • Young learners make up the majority of classes and are grouped by age.
  • Maximum of 16 students per class (in a Shane English school).
  • Teaching assistants are on hand to provide support for the teacher with younger learner classes. Their duties range from helping to discipline students to correcting homework and undertaking telephone teaching.
  • Teachers should be aware that parents of the younger learners have extremely high expectations. There is a high demand for progress and parents can be demanding on their children and the teacher (though the teacher is always respected).
  • Organised parent observation sessions are offered at the end of every term (every 16 weeks or so).

Adults

  • Adult learners are grouped by ability ranging from beginner to advanced.
  • Maximum of 16 students per class.
  • The majority of the classes are group study with a few one-to-one lessons.
  • Adult students may require English for their jobs, to secure promotion or to be able to study and work overseas; alternatively some attend English classes for the enjoyment and social aspects of learning a new language and a new culture.

Outside Locations Students

  • Shane teachers teach in a variety of locations including Shane English schools and public kindergartens, elementary schools and company offices.
  • Teaching in outside locations is organised on a term basis, sometimes with more than one class a week.
  • Class sizes of up to 40 students.
  • Teaching assistants, or the children’s regular teacher, are on hand to provide support for the teacher with younger learner classes.
