Saxoncourt Recruitment
Shane English Schools China
Frequently Asked Questions

This document is a general guide in answer to questions that are commonly asked about working for Shane English School China (SESC) and will be updated should any of the situations below change.

Please contact your recruiter if there are any points you are unclear of. Teachers should refer to the information material and orientation pack (available after interview) and Work Regulations and Directives (provided with employment offer) for more detailed answers to these questions.

Some of the answers contain detailed information that may be useful at various stages of the recruitment procedure, but may be too detailed if you are at the early stages of the application.

Spending (at least) one year in a faraway and foreign country is a big commitment and it is best to clear up any doubts or areas that you are unsure of before signing your Letter of Understanding and departing for China.

A. Applications
When should I apply?
SESC accepts applications all year round. To allow enough time for the visa process, however, it is best to apply 2/3 months ahead of when you would like to go to China.

I am due to take a CELTA/TESOL course. Should I apply afterwards?
SESC are happy to accept an application and arrange an interview before the course but an offer would be conditional on successfully passing the course.

When do you recruit teachers?
The main recruiting periods are for February and September to coincide with the start of the academic terms. However the schools need teachers regularly thouroughout the year to cope with the rapid expansion.

Who do you employ?
SESC employs native speakers with a full university degree and an accredited TEFL qualification (eg CELTA). Teachers without a TEFL qualification are required to take our FELT course. (Foundation to English Language Teaching)

I am waiting to graduate. What shall I do?
It is possible to submit and application form and be interviewed before graduating. Contact Saxoncourt Recruitment to begin the application process and start researching China and teaching abroad.

Can we apply as a couple / family?
Yes, couples and families may apply but the practical considerations should be taken into account. (E.g. salaries, cost of living, working hours, accommodation)

Can I apply for a senior position such as Senior Teacher or Assistant Director of Studies (ADoS)?
As SESC is growing so rapidly they need Senior Teachers and ADoS's in many locations across China. If you have TEFL qualifications and previous teaching experience (especially with younger learners), SESC would welcome applications for a more senior position.

Why do I need to fill in an Application Form even though I have applied online or sent my CV?
The application form asks for specific details about any EFL experience as well as you interests and motivations for going to China. The application also comes with a pre-interview task, which is necessary for the interview. Application forms are also part of the necessary visa paperwork required by the visa authorities in China.

Do I need to attend an interview?
Yes. The interview is an important part of the selection process. It is also a chance for you to discuss your application with an experienced recruitment consultant who has spent time teaching and working abroad. They will also have first hand experience of China.

What is the interview format?
Interviews last approximately 90 mins and are divided into sections; the first section is a discussion of the application and teaching and the second section focuses on giving more information about living and working in China and answering any questions.

When will I know if I have been successful?
Together with SESC, all applications are reviewed based on the general application and overall performance in the interview. This process usually takes a week. Saxoncourt endeavour to get back to the applicant as soon as possible.

When do I have to commit myself to accepting a job offer?
An official job offer is made in writing. All applicants are given a deadline (approx 7-10 days) in which to accept or decline the offer.

B. Visas
How do I obtain a visa?
There is a 2 part visa process. The "Z" visa is obtained in the UK and is advised by Saxoncourt and the other part takes place in China. Teachers are given full visa support in both the UK and on arrival in China.

What paperwork do I need to organise my visa
In the UK: official letters of invitation from the school in China, a visa application form, passport, passport photo and visa fee. In China: The teaching application form, a copy of your degree certificate, a copy of you passport and 8 passport photos.

How long does it take?
It takes the Visa office in China approx 1 month to process paperwork and issue the letters of invitation. The "Z" visa process in the UK (as soon as the letters of invitation arrive) takes 3 working days. To obtain residency and foreign experts certificates in China, it usually takes between 1-2 weeks.

Do I need to have my original degree certificate? Will a letter from the university be sufficient?
You do require your certificate

What if I don't have a degree certificate?
You should contact your University about issuing a copy certificate (please note that most Universities charge for this service)

Who does the visa?
Saxoncourt Recruitment and SESC will arrange the necessary paperwork for the visa. Teachers must visit the Chinese embassy (UK) in person to get the visa once all the documents have been returned from China.

Who pays for the visa?
All costs incurred in England are paid for by the teacher. The standard visa processing fee is £30.00 but there are rush handling services available (same day and 24hour) for an additional fee. All visa charges in China are paid for by SESC.

I want to go travelling prior to my departure. Is this possible?
Providing that the visa has been organised prior to your departure. The school must have a contact e-mail address thouroughout the time.

Can you guarantee my departure date?
Yes. There are fixed monthly departure dates, arranged to coincide with arrival orientation and training.

Do I have to have a medical exam?
Medical exams are necessary if you are going to Beijing. No medical is necessary in Shanghai unless teachers stay for a second year.

What does it involve?
It's a thorough medical but teachers should not feel intimidated by this. The standard of hospital in the major cities of China is good and everyone is accompanied by a member of the school welfare department. The medical carries out a blood test for AIDS, STDs and other major diseases, checks blood pressure, does an abdominal x-ray and an ultrasound. There is also an ear, nose and thouroat examination and an eye test

What if I fail the medical exam?
We are unable to process the Foreign Expert's certificate and will be unable to employ you as a teacher. You will be required to leave the country at your own expense.

C. Flights
Who arranges the flight? Can I arrange my own flight?
Saxoncourt provisionally reserve flights through STA Travel for all teachers. Research and experience shows that STA offer the best competitive fares to teachers of all ages. Organising a flight with STA also allows teachers to travel out together to China. Teachers can arrange their own flights but departure and arrival times and fares must be checked with the recruiter first.

Who pays for the flight?
Teachers are responsible for the flight payment upfront and are then reimbursed the cost of a one-way flight up to 4,200 RMB during their contract period.

When do I pay for my flight?
As soon as the Z visa is issued in the UK, teachers contact STA directly to confirm and pay for the flight.

Is it a return flight?
Most teachers buy a single ticket to give greater flexibility at the end of the contract. Maybe you want to stay for a second year or go travelling around China or visit some neighbouring countries. Teachers usually purchase a return ticket with money they have saved or the final re-imbursement of their outgoing flight.

Does the company pay for my return flight?
No, SESC will reimburse the cost of a single ticket up to 4,200 RMB. 50% is advanced after 6 months and the balance paid at the end of the contract. If the teacher does not complete the contract the monies advanced must be repaid to the Company.

Can I fly from a regional airport such as Manchester, Edinburgh?
Yes. You must inform Saxoncourt at the provisional flight booking stage. The only direct flights to China, however, are from Heathrow with Virgin Airlines. Other airlines may go via Amsterdam or Paris.

How much luggage can I take?
For most airline, the current allowance is 20 kg. Hand Luggage allowance is 6 kg. Excess baggage is charged at £30/kg. - so pack carefully!

What happens when I arrive? Will I be met at the airport?
You will be met by the welfare officer or your franchise school owner. They will be holding a card with your name on it and will give you other documents. They take you to your apartment or temporary accommodation.

Should I take out travel Insurance?
Travel insurance is often a good idea if you are bringing very expensive items. However electronic goods, clothes and other essential items are all cheap in China so it is probably wiser to pack simply. Clothes are very easy and cheap to buy (in all sizes - made to measure is stunningly cheap) but large sized shoes may be difficult.

How can I order a vegetarian meal?
Notify the airline in advance (via STA, at the flight confirmation stage)

What's the best/cheapest way of sending extra items to China?
See packing below.
Top

D. Apartments and Locations
What happens when I arrive?
You will be met at the airport by the welfare officer or the school franchise owner. They will take you to your apartment or hotel. Teachers stay in a hotel if the previous teacher has not moved out yet; the apartment is not ready or a teacher is transferring to an outside region franchise after training.

How do I find an apartment? Who pays?
The Company will find your apartment prior to you arrival. You are responsible for the rent (ranges from 1,500-2,000 RMB). The Company will loan you money to pay the initial deposit (1months rent), which teachers, then pay back in instalments.

How long does it take to find an apartment?
If the apartment has not been found prior to arrival you will be placed in an apartment as soon as possible. This will not normally be longer than 10 days after arrival.

Can I get help with start-up costs?
Yes. The Company can offer interest free loans (up to 3,000 RMB) to any teacher in the first 3 months.

Will I be living in the same block as other teachers? Will I share my apartment?
Most apartments are shared. You will have your own room but share communal facilities. Some teachers, however, may live alone. The school tries hard to place teachers in the nearby vicinity of each other. This may not always possible. Some teachers may also live in the same apartment block.

Can I choose where I live?
If an apartment hasn't been found prior to arrival the school may be able to give you a choice of apartments but this is not always possible. Most apartments are organised to be in convenient reach of the school that the teacher is assigned to.

If I don't like my apartment, can I ask for another one? Are they safe?
Yes, but it may not be possible to move immediately. Advice on the safety of apartments is always available but the school would not place a teacher in an unsafe area.

Are apartments furnished or unfurnished?
They are basically furnished, including bed, sofa, TV but some items such as kitchenware may not be in the apartment. Teachers will be advised where to purchase necessary things if they are not provided.

Can I live alone?
Yes but it is generally more expensive.(approximately 2,500 RMB per month) Initially the school endeavours to allocate teachers to a shared apartment unless specifically told otherwise. Such specific requests must be forwarded to the Recruiter during the recruitment procedure. In some cases, the schools will be unable to arrange a shared apartment and teachers will, initially, have to live alone.

Are they company apartments?
They are not company apartments. The apartments are owned by local landlords who are happy to rent to Shane English School teachers.

E. Contracts
How long is the contract?
Contracts are a minimum of 12 months, starting on the 1st of the month.

What happens if I leave before the end of the contract? What are the penalties?
SESC is very serious about the minimum contract period of one year and candidates who foresee not being able to make this commitment should not consider applying to SESC. Leaving before the end of the first year would be considered as a breach of contract and would incur the following penalties: airfares and training costs repaid (FELT course if applicable). If less than required 3-month notice is given then all bonuses (end of contract, quarterly) are forfeited. Breach of contract can also have an effect on the visa as it is sponsored by the school. The school are legally obliged to cancel this visa. However, SESC realises that as ex-patriots, circumstances occasionally arise which may require you to return to your home country. SESC will take a more compassionate view of such cases. The most important factor is to keep the school, as your employer, fully aware of any personal circumstances that may affect your work. Remember that they are here to help.

Can I renew my contract?
SESC are very keen to renew the contract of teachers who have reached the necessary standards. Teachers will of course receive performance reviews during the course of their contract. It is very difficult to get the most out of China (and teaching) if you only stay a short period of time. There are financial incentives to do so as well.

If I renew do I have to stay the whole year?
No, as long as you give the required notice period you can extend for any period of time. The longer you stay the greater the bonuses!

What's the difference between ex-gratia bonuses & overtime?
Ex-gratia bonuses are additional payments for any hours you teach over 72 hours in any month. They are paid quarterly (monthly in Beijing) at fixed times of the year. E.g. January - March bonus is paid in April's paycheck on May 10th).Overtime is paid for any classes that the teacher agrees to teach outside of the 9 hour shift. However it should be noted that these situations are extremely rare.

Can I take holidays when I want?
You get 22 days paid holiday. Usually there are about 15 Chinese national holidays which come at set times. Teachers can choose 7 days over the rest of the year.

Do I get sick pay?
Not directly. For each day of work that an employee misses, a proportional deduction will be made from their monthly salary, in this case the target hours for ex-gratia bonuses would then be lowered by 3.6 hours. Alternatively, teachers can choose to use one of paid holiday days(without a reduction in target hours).

Can I transfer to other Shane schools in China?
With the rapid expansion of Shane English School thouroughout China there are plenty of opportunities for existing teachers to transfer to other schools and cities. Internal transfers usually happen after 1 yr in a school but sometimes an earlier transfer is possible.

Can I transfer to other Shane schools in Asia?
After the satisfactory completion of at least your first year contract, you will have the opportunity to apply for positions with Shane English School, Taiwan and Japan Internal transfers are high on SESC's agenda and they aim to provide a solid structure for teacher development, teaching opportunities and internal promotions, both within Shane English Schools and Saxoncourt affiliated companies around the globe, to all employees. Academic line managers are available to discuss these opportunities.

Can I choose another school/area if I renew?
Yes. This will also depend on the requirements of the school at that time. However we have a number of schools around China so there are many options.

F. Money
Can I save a lot? How much?
This is a difficult question to answer as people's lifestyles and thus expenditures vary dramatically, as do their financial commitments at home. An average Chinese salary for a Chinese graduate is 3,000 RMB. SESC teachers receive a basic monthly salary of at least 6,600 RMB. There are additional increments for qualifications and experience and a city weighting allowance. This salary allows for a very nice standard of living and the saving capacity is good. Here is a rough guide to costs and expenditure:
Monthly salary + 7,000 RMB
Rent (approx.) - 1,500 RMB
Bills (approx.) - 350 RMB (possibly more in winter/summer due to heating/air conditioning)
Tax - 300 RMB
This leaves you with around 5,000 RMB to live on, which can be done for around 1,500 RMB if you eat and drink in local Chinese restaurants (beer for 3 RMB as opposed to 20 RMB in bars!) and don't do too much shopping. If you regularly go out to ex-pat bars, eat out at Western-style or more expensive restaurants and buy a lot of DVDs, clothes and electrical goods, you'll get thourough most of your salary, but have a lot of fun in the process!

How much bonus will I make?
This very much depends on the teachers schedule but the average teacher teaches between 20 - 25 hours a week (this rises during the busy summer and winter holidays) so bonuses vary. If you teach 25 hours a week you can expect to receive a bonus of 1,575 RMB. Initially teachers may be on a lower weekly schedule while the school builds up your timetable. Teaching schedules between all the schools (Shanghai, Beijing, Hefei etc) may differ.

How do costs compare to the UK?
Living in China is extremely cheap. Day to day living, shopping, eating and drinking can be done at very low prices. However certain things like buying designer wear and frequenting ex-pat bars and foreign restaurants can be expensive. Travel is very reasonable around China and it is very reasonable to fly to neighbouring countries (e.g. Thailand 3,000 RMB (215 GBP) return)

Do I need to set up a bank account in China? How do I do this?
Teacher's salaries are paid in cash and most teachers deposit this money into a bank account (the safest way) immediately after. The Company welfare officer (or franchise member of staff) will take you to the bank to assist you in the paperwork and application process. It is simple and straightforward.

How can I send money home?
This can be quite a difficult and complex process in China and only possible in the major cities. SESC will supply teachers with authorised forms stating your earnings (and income tax paid). When the bank has processed these documents and they have all UK bank details they can organise the money transfer. The Bank of China is used by most teachers. There is an administration cost both in China and in the UK. It is recommended that teachers don't plan to make transferring a monthly thin.g There are other money transfer services available (such as Western Union) but they tend to be more expensive.

Can I pay off my student loans?
With the saving capacity outlined above, it may be possible to transfer some funds home to help to pay off the loan but it depends on the size of the loan and an individual's lifestyle in China. For those who fee that they are not in a position to send money home to pay off a loan, the school will provide the necessary letters confirming salaries to help in the deferment of the loans.

Can I use my Visa/Cirrus card in ATMs?
Yes. All ATM accept the above and are accessible 24 hours a day, Whilst China is a more cash based society(particularly outside the eastern cities, the number of establishments accepting credit cards is increasing.

How much money should I bring? How should I bring it?
The recommended start up funds should be around 500 GBP (approximately 7,000 RMB) Travellers cheques (US dollars or Sterling) are always the best way to carry large amounts of money abroad and can be deposited into a bank account or exchanged (it is a good idea to keep these exchange slips as they can be used to change money back in to dollars or sterling). It is now possible to obtain Chinese Renmenbi (RMB) in the UK with a few days notice, and there don't appear to be any limits on amounts that can be taken in.

G. Insurance, Tax, Pensions
Will I have to pay UK income tax on my earnings in China when I return?, What about NI contributions?
Teachers are advised to contact the Inland Revenue for the latest tax and NI information. If you are out of the country for 12 months consecutively, you will normally be classified as 'non-resident and non-domicile' and therefore not liable to UK income tax, although you will have to be careful with remittances, which technically should be liable to UK income tax. You can inform the Inland Revenue either at the time of departure or on return from China of your situation. Information is available from the Inland Revenue at www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/cnr/ but they will only assess your situation on a case-by-case situation. You can continue to pay minimum NI contributions if you wish, and this can be done directly with the Inland Revenue. However, unless you ask to do this, your NI contributions will cease as soon as you stop employment in the UK.

Can I join a pension scheme?
There is no pension scheme available for teachers.

What does the Insurance cover? Do I have to take it?
Teachers are asked to arrange insurance prior to arrival in China. This is compulsory and the Company will reimburse you up to 1,300 RMB. Most insurance companies/travel agencies offer various deals with varying levels of insurance cover (standard, premier, premier plus) depending on the individual's requirements. Most teachers opt for a basic 12month travel. Teachers are encouraged to shop around and research all the policies to find one that suits them best.

Does it cover repatriation? Dentists?
This depends on the individual scheme.

What happens if I have an accident? Do I pay medical bills upfront?
It is important to take the insurance policy with you. In the event of an accident all hospital bills will be paid up front and then the teacher can make an application to the insurance company to get the money refunded.

Can I visit an English Speaking Doctor? How do I find a doctor?
There are many English-speaking doctors in the major cities. If a doctor is needed the Company will guide you to suitable hospitals or clinics. If translation is necessary the Company will arrange a member of staff to accompany you.

Will I be able to obtain my regular medication?
Please check all pre-existing conditions with the Insurance policy you have chosen. There are western clinics in China who are able to cope with all medical needs. If you need any special medicine, try to bring as much as you can. It is probably available there but might be difficult to get hold of, and anyway basic medicines are much cheaper in the UK. If you have a prescribed medicine make sure your doctor spells out exactly what it is (in very clear handwriting). This would help the Chinese doctor recognise it. Many teachers use Chinese hospitals as these are cheap and the service is usually quick and efficient. The standard of hospitals in all the major cities is good.

Does the Insurance policy cover possessions?
This depends on the insurance policy. If a teacher is taking expensive equipment with them (laptops, camera's etc) some sort of contents insurance is advised. Contents insurance is unusual in China and therefore, should be organised in the UK.

How does the tax system work in China?
The first 4,000 RMB is non-taxable income. Any amount earned over 4,000 RMB is taxed as follows:
* 2,000-5,000 : 15% (less 125 RMB)
* 5,000-20,000: 20% (less 375 RMB)
E.g. Salary: 7,040 RMB
Non-taxable income: 4,000 RMB
Taxable income: 3,040 RMB
15% of 3,040 = 456 RMB
Less 125 = 331 RMB

H. Training
How much training will I get?
FELT teachers: 5 days in London, UK
FELT and CELTA teachers: 4 days on arrival in China.

What does training cover?
The Saxoncourt Teaching English to Younger Learners (TEYL) course covers all aspects of teaching Younger Learners for 2 years old to High School, and includes methodology, drilling, classroom games, classroom management and how to effectively use textbooks and classroom resources. New teachers will observe more experienced teachers. Further training during the year will focus on teaching reading, writing and phonics, as well as teaching pronunciation to adults and 1-to-1 lessons. Other workshops will focus on teaching for exams (TOEIC, IELTS), Business English, special lessons (such as Intensives) and any other areas that teachers request help with.

When do we get training?
All teachers receive training upon arrival in China (TEYL) and there are regular workshops and meetings with academic managers thouroughout the contract.

Is training compulsory, even if I have a lot of experience?
We have a wide range of classes, students and textbooks that are particular to Shane English Schools China and it is important for teachers to be given a thorough introduction. We use workshops; small group meetings, observations and appraisals to ensure all teachers are given opportunities for development and provided with sufficient support.

Will I get special training for business, exams etc?
Yes. Specialist workshops are run as and when required.

How much academic support will I get?
Teachers receive a lot of academic support, many schools have managers based in the school who will have regular contact with the teachers and always be available for advice. For those schools without on-site academic managers then there is a designated manager for these schools based in Head Office who is always available for consultation.

>>FOR FELT (NON CELTA/TESOL) TEACHERS:
Can I upgrade my FELT to a CELTA in China?
At present there is no CELTA course offered in China. Teachers who are interested in upgrading to a CELTA would have to return to the UK or go to a country where CELTA courses are offered.

As a FELT teacher, will I be adequately prepared for teaching?
CELTA and FELT teachers do the same Younger Learner training when they first arrive, which means that they will have received a similar amount of training for dealing with those classes. Initially a CELTA teacher will be much more prepared for teaching adults than a FELT teacher. FELT teachers will need to realize that they'll have to work hard to implement everything that is covered in training and that their classes will gradually improve as time goes on.

Will I be less valued than a CELTA teacher?
Other than a difference in salary paid to reflect the extra investment made by teachers who have completed a CELTA course there is no question of FELT teachers being less valued. It is understood that FELT teachers will require extra training and support but they will be given schedules exactly the same as those given to CELTA qualified teachers and expected to teach them just as satisfactorily.

Will I have a chance of promotion?
SESC are expanding rapidly, opening new schools thouroughout China. The demand for senior teachers, Assistant Director of Studies and Director of Studies is, therefore, substantial. Initially, all teachers must work in SESC in a teaching capacity in order to experience all SESC systems and procedures, but head office welcome all applications for senior positions. If a teacher demonstrates their ability in the classroom and a co-operative and contributory attitude to SESC as a whole, the chances of promotion are excellent.

I. Teaching and Schedules
When do I start teaching?
Teachers are scheduled to arrive on Sundays. Monday is day off to find your feet and get over jet lag. Training starts on Tuesday morning and continues thourough until Friday. You may start teaching on the Saturday or Sunday (one of which will be day off) or you will be observing classes. Your full schedule will start on the Monday.

What days off will I have?
All teachers have 2 days off usually during the week. (these days are usually non-consecutive). TEFL is not a 9-5, Monday to Friday job and the weekend's are the busiest times. Teachers should expect to work both Saturday and Sunday or at least one of those days.

Will I have to work extra days?
Teachers are sometimes asked to work a 6th day to cover sick teachers or teachers on holiday. These are organised on a rota system. For any extra day worked a teacher can take a day off in lieu at a later date and all hours worked go towards the quarterly ex-gratia bonus.

How long is the working day?
You are scheduled for a working shift of 8 hours plus at least 1 hour for lunch. SESC are very strict about arrival times for teachers (minimum 30 minutes prior to first class) but they are relaxed about finish times. If you have finished teaching your last class and all your administration is up to date then you are free to leave regardless of the time. For example if you started teaching at 9am then your shift would start at 8:30am and finish at 5:30pm. However if your last class finished at 3pm then you would be free to go. Needless to say schedules do sometimes change and the school manager may schedule a class at any time during the 9 hour working shift. If there is a break longer than 2 hours in the middle of the day we call it a split shift and a 12-hour spread of classes is possible. Regardless of the type of shift you will not be asked to teach more than 6 hours in a working day. Most teachers average about 3-5 hours a day or teach a lot of hours at the weekend with light weekday schedules.

Do I work in the same school every day?
You will work for a single Shane school and a lot of the weekend teaching takes place here in the Shane School. A lot of the teaching takes place in outside locations such as kindergartens, state schools and companies especially thouroughout the week.

Do I have to teach kids?
Yes! The market in China is based around young learners so expect to teach a wide range of children from 3yrs+. SESC do have adult classes and try to give teachers an interesting mix of classes but the majority of your teaching will be with children.

Do I get observed?
Yes, your line manager will observe you in your first few weeks of teaching. After this you will be observed as part of your continual development programme on a regular basis. After each observation with your line manager you will have a feedback session in which you will be given the opportunity to discuss areas of your teaching which are going well as well as those which need to be improved. As well as these observations with your line manager, you may also periodically be observed by potential students, students' parents, school staff and your peers.

Is there enough time to prepare for lessons?
Lesson Planning is a skill that comes with time and experience. Teachers are recommended to be in school at least 30mins before but sometime it is advisable to arrive earlier in order to plan sufficiently. There are opportunities thourough the working day (breaks) to complete the lesson plans. All schools have fully stocked resource rooms and all SES texts have teacher's books that act as a guide and help a teacher prepare efficiently.

Do I have access to a photocopier and supplementary materials?
All schools have a photocopier and a teachers room where there are good resources and supplementary materials.

Are there computers in the Schools?
Yes, teachers have access to at least 1 computer

What teaching materials should I take with me?
All of the materials that you will require can be found in the schools. However, all teachers should possess a good grammar reference book that will prove an essential item and if you have any favourite photocopiable materials, please feel free to bring these with you. Maps and brochures of your local area, menus, leaflets (delivery pizza, take away menus, etc.), newspaper inserts, in store adverts, examples of yellow pages and phone directories, flyers, tickets, bus and train maps and timetables, hotel registration forms, any application forms (e.g. ask at a local shop), post office information, museum information, local television and radio listings, tourist information, a recording of a radio station, recipe pages, children's reading books etc. may also be of use as teaching aids.

How do you differ in terms of methodology compared to other schools in China? Compared to other countries?
Unlike our major competitors we employ a variety of texts each chosen to meet the specific needs of the level or age group of students being taught. Furthermore we don't have a 'Shane method'. Instead we have a number of well-qualified and experienced academic managers who advise and support teachers in trying to meet the needs of their students. Teachers are best placed to understand those needs as again unlike our major competitors, teachers have a fixed schedule, are able to meet their students each week and, within agreed pacing parameters, therefore determine the optimum method for teaching their students. TEFL in China is a very different market to other countries, especially Europe and South America. There is more focus on 'communication' and lessons are much shorter. A lot of TEFL ideas do not work so well in China - such as a lot of discussion and debates.

Which exam courses will I teach?
SESC run IELTS courses in certain schools. Unless you have previous teaching experience you will not usually be required to teach exam courses immediately and all teachers who teach IELTS receive full guidance and support.

How much business teaching is there?
SESC have a growing number of clients and we expect this to play a larger part of our business in the future. However at the moment the majority of classes are young learners.

Can I teach privately?
Teaching privately is not allowed for full-time teachers and any other employment must first be approved by your line manager. If teachers want extra hours then teachers are asked to discuss it with their academic manager.

J. Dress
What constitutes acceptable work dress?
A male Teacher should wear a formal shirt and tie, a business suit/trousers (not jeans) and formal shoes (not trainers, non-formal style boots, or sandals). A female Teacher should wear a formal blouse (not a T-shirt) with a business suit/skirt/trousers, or a smart dress, and formal shoes (not trainers, non-formal style boots, or sandals). Hairstyles, jewellery and standards of personal hygiene should be consistent with these guidelines (e.g. A male Teacher may not wear earrings/nose rings, and a female Teacher may not wear nose rings; clothes should be regularly laundered, and shirts/blouses ironed; male teachers should avoid 'stubble').

Do I have to shave off my beard?
No but a male teacher should maintain his facial hair, keeping it neat and tidy.

Do I have to wear a tie for all lessons?
You are required to wear a tie for all classes in a Shane school or outside location. This rule is sometimes relaxed during the summer in outside locations. Especially where the school facilities (air-conditioning) are below average. This is to be agreed first with the manager.

Can I wear jewellery?
Unobtrusive jewellery such as rings and necklaces are totally acceptable provided they do not have sharp edges that may injure children unintentionally. This is especially important for kindergarten teachers who are in contact with the very young children all day long. Please also be aware that teachers have been injured in the past by young children 'pulling' on earrings, and therefore studs are highly recommended over rings. Small earrings or studs are fine but any other studs or rings are unacceptable and should be removed whilst on company premises or on company business. These include (but may not be limited to); nose studs, eyebrow studs, tongue studs etc

K. Social / Pastoral

Most schools offer free beginner Mandarin classes to teachers. If they are not available it is very easy to meet local Chinese students who are very keen to have language exchanges. In all "ex-pat" listing magazines, there will also be adverts for private language teachers and schools. It is recommended that teachers invest in a dictionary or phrase book and make some efforts to tackle Chinese prior to their departure.

Are there social events for teachers?
Schools often organise meals for teachers and staff. There are many excuses for a party in the Chinese calendar such as Chinese New year, Workers Day Holiday and National Day Holiday. Trips to local areas of interest are also organized. In most of the schools, there is plenty to do and it is never hard to entertain yourself.

Is China a safe country?
As with any developing country you must be aware there can be a huge disparity between local and foreign salaries. Therefore it is wise not to overtly display your wealth in more remote areas and be careful of your wallet and camera in crowded places. Otherwise people generally find China very safe (violent crime against foreigners is almost unheard of) and the people are only too willing to help you in any situation.

Are there any dangers or annoyances?
You may get hassled by beggars wherever you go but this is pretty standard and although persistent a short burst of quick walking usually gets around the problem! Any independent research via a Rough Guide or a Lonely Planet will indicate other annoyances in China, notably the Chinese traits of spitting, shoving, queue jumping and staring.

Yes, all schools have access to the internet, which teachers can use. There are also Internet café's everywhere, which are cheap.

Is it difficult for Vegetarians in China?
There are lots of excellent vegetarian dishes, particularly in the Buddhist temple restaurants. However it can be difficult for vegetarians for a few reasons, firstly the language barrier makes it very difficult to find out what is in a dish (and nearly impossible to read labels!) and this coupled with the Chinese tendency to include meat/meat stock in many dishes creates a risk when picking food. However there are an abundance of fresh vegetable and fruit markets in each city, as well as large supermarkets such as Carrefour and many teachers actually cook at home.

Can I get an English Newspaper/English books?
There are one or two English language newspapers depending on where the teacher is located. Around China there is the China Daily, and in Shanghai you can buy the China Daily and the Shanghai Daily. These can be bought from newspaper vendors on the street, though this is less likely in the cities further west. Be warned that even if you do find a copy the quality of coverage and stories is often poor and don't be expecting the Sunday Times at weekends (in fact there is one edition for Saturday AND Sunday!) Nearly all cities have a foreign language bookstore, but the quality will vary form city to city as will the range of books and magazines, but it should be possible to pick up a good read at a reasonable price (especially the Penguin Classic range at a bargain 10 RMB each)

How can I phone home cheaply?
Everyone uses IP (internet prepaid) cards, which are very reasonable. They are available in denominations of 30/50/100/200 RMB and are available from the small street vendors in each city, which means that you will rarely have to pay face value for the card. 100 RMB cards are usually available for 50-75 RMB and provide around 30 minutes talk time back to the UK.
