Recruitment > China > Salary

Shane Teachers are paid very well compared to local salaries. A typical teacher’s salary is about twice a good Chinese graduate salary. Eating, drinking and shopping the Chinese way will mean your salary goes a long way. Western brands, restaurants, pubs and clubs are affordable as a treat, but can be quite expensive.

The Chinese currency is the Chinese Yuan Renminbi (CNY or Rmb).

Basic Salary

  • Basic monthly Salary is guaranteed at 6,600 CNY.
  • Salaries are paid in cash on the 10th of each month.
  • Assistance is given in setting up Chinese bank account.

Increments

  • Increments for TEFL and other teaching qualifications
  • Increments for previous post-qualification teaching experience
  • Shanghai and Beijing weighting reflecting higher cost of living

Bonuses, Overtime and Sick Leave

  • Overtime is rare
  • Any hours worked outside the 8hour shift, not including lunch break, are paid at 90 CNY per hour
  • Ex-gratia bonus for hours taught over 72 hours a month, this is for hours taught within normal shifts, not an overtime payment
  • Ex-gratia bonus is paid at a rate of 75 CNY per hour
  • Teachers do not receive sick pay
  • For each day sick, teachers have a choice of reducing their paid leave by 1 day or being deducted a day’s pay but having the monthly ex-gratia bonus target (72 hrs) reduced by daily average
  • Contract completion bonus for 1st full year and for at least six months of subsequent contracts

Cost of Living

We recommend that all teachers take a minimum of £500.00 to cover setting up and day-to-day living costs from arrival until the first full pay day.

  • Tax works out as roughly 5% of salary (can vary slightly)
  • The cost of living in China is very low and your paycheque goes a long way
  • However going out at night can be quite expensive if done in western establishments
  • Average rents in Shanghai and Beijing for a shared apartment are approximately one quarter of your salary
  • Shopping for clothes, electrical goods, CDs, DVDs etc. is very affordable
  • Travel within cities and also across China is cheap
  • The school pays for all travel to and from work
