| It is very difficult for a non-resident
to arrange his or her own accommodation in China,
especially from outside the country.
With this in mind, SES China/the school will organise,
before arrival, a basically furnished apartment
for all teachers.
Apartments
- The vast majority of accommodation is shared
with one or two other teachers.
- Teachers have their own bedroom and share
a bathroom, kitchen and living room.
- All accommodation will have basic furniture
such as a telephone, bed, sofa and TV.
- No kitchenware and bedding is supplied but
can be purchased very easily and cheaply.
- Apartments are usually located reasonably
near to schools and are well connected by public
transport.
- Residential locations are usually bustling
with Chinese shops and restaurants.
Costs
- Teachers pay for the initial set up costs
(deposit, rent in advance).
- The school will normally loan the teacher
these costs to be repaid over 6 months.
- Average rents in Shanghai and Beijing for
a shared apartment range between 1,500 –
1,750 CNY per month. Approximately a quarter
of a teacher’s salary.
- A single apartment is approximately 2,500
CNY. Just over a third of a teacher’s
salary.
- Rent is usually deducted at source. Either
SESC is the landlord or has paid a private landlord
in advance for the accommodation.
- Utility bills are all payable by the teacher
at local banks, post offices or convenience
stores.
- Average utility bills are 100 CNY per month
on average.
